When is the best time to take Newborn baby photos?
08/16/2024

Capturing your baby’s first photos is truly an honour. With over 9 years of experience in newborn photography, I’ve learned the ideal times to bring your little one in for their session. These moments are fleeting, and timing is everything to ensure we capture those precious, sleepy poses.

1. How Old Is ‘Newborn’?

  • Ideal Timing: For the best newborn photography results, photographers generally prefer to photograph babies between 5 to 10 days old. This is when babies are typically still very flexible and sleepy.
  • Beyond Ideal: If your baby has already arrived and is older than 10 days, we strive to book sessions before 21 days old. Though technically, the newborn phase can extend a few weeks, capturing those early days is most effective during this timeframe due to the unique traits of newborns.

2. Why Under 21 Days Old?

  • Flexibility: Newborns are naturally flexible and can curl up into the fetal position, which is comforting for them and allows for those adorable poses you see in professional photos.
  • Sleepiness: Newborns can sleep up to 18 hours a day, making it easier to pose them without causing distress. This sleepiness helps in creating serene and beautiful images as they remain comfortable while being gently positioned.

3. Can I Still Get Newborn Portraits If My Baby Is Older?

  • Older Babies: While older babies (over 21 days old) can still be photographed, they might not be as flexible or sleepy, and the resulting images may differ from the traditional sleepy poses.
  • Developmental Changes: Babies grow quickly, and even a week’s difference can lead to noticeable changes in their awareness and flexibility. Over 6 weeks old, you’re more likely to have a gallery full of awake, expressive images.

4. How Can I Book When I Don’t Know When My Baby Will Arrive?

  • Booking in Advance: To accommodate the unpredictability of birth dates, you can schedule your newborn portrait session once you’ve had your 20-week scan. Provide your due date, and we’ll tentatively book your session for about a week after that.
  • Flexibility: We will stay in touch as your due date approaches and adjust the appointment as needed. Due to the variability in birth timing, about 90% of sessions are rescheduled from the initial planned date.

Availability

  • Limited Slots: To ensure each baby gets the attention they deserve, I only take a limited number of bookings each month. This helps me manage the schedule and accommodate changes effectively.

If you’re interested in booking a newborn session, please reach out to check availability around your due date. This way, we can ensure that you capture these fleeting early moments in a way that best reflects your baby’s unique charm and beauty.
